Heavenly Hundred: Remembering the Heroes of Ukraine’s Revolution

The tragic events of the Revolution of Dignity, which unfolded in Ukraine, will forever be etched in the nation’s memory. The names of those who sacrificed their lives for freedom and a European future are revered as heroes. This article commemorates the fallen heroes, remembers the events of those days, and honors their ultimate sacrifice.
The somber list of the Heavenly Hundred began on January 22, 2014, when activists Serhiy Nihoian and Mikhailo Zhiznevsky died from gunshot wounds during clashes in the center of the capital. On the same day, the body of activist Yuriy Verbytsky, with signs of torture, was found in a forest near Kyiv. By February 18, 2014, there were already 9 deaths. From February 18 to 20, the most people died on the Maidan – 78 people, after February 20 – another 20. All of them entered the memorial of the fighters for Ukrainian Independence – the Heavenly Hundred.
105 Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred were posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, and three foreigners – citizen of Belarus Mikhailo Zhiznevsky, Georgia – Zurab Khurtsia and David Kipiani, posthumously awarded the Orders of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. Ukraine paid too high a price for liberation from dictatorship and its civilizational choice – to be a part of Europe.
