The Day of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes is commemorated annually on February 20th in Ukraine. This day honors the immense human, civic, and national courage, selflessness, strength of spirit, and resilience of citizens. These qualities changed the course of Ukrainian history, recognizing the sacrifice of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes who gave their lives during the Revolution of Dignity (November 2013 – February 2014). They defended the ideals of democracy, upheld human rights and freedoms, and championed the European future of Ukraine. A thematic event, “Not Among Us, But With Us…”, took place at the Volodymyr Nozhka Culture Center. The event remembered the events of February 2014. Attendees listened to memories of the bloody events on Instytutska Street in Kyiv from Tetyana Bondarchuk, the wife of Serhiy Bondarchuk, a Hero of the Heavenly Hundred and a native of our land. Attendees watched archival footage of those events and patriotic works were presented by artists of our community. Natalia SHABELNYK, the Head of the Executive Committee of the Starokostiantyniv City Council, participated in the event.
February 20, 2025, marks 11 years since the mass shootings of the Heavenly Hundred on Maidan Nezalezhnosti. It also marks 11 years since the beginning of Russian aggression. It was during the tragic events on Instytutska Street in Kyiv, where unarmed protesters died on February 20, 2014 (48 participants of the revolution were killed), that the Russian Federation began its military aggression, annexing the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and subsequently occupying parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. On February 24, 2022, the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war began, which has been ongoing for three years, bringing death, sorrow, and destruction to Ukrainians. This is the price Ukraine pays for the right to be on the world map and to have its own sovereignty and statehood. Our heroes resolutely stood up to defend our Homeland. These were the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred.
