Veterans to Receive Enhanced Protection from Debt Collectors – Government Supports Ministry of Veterans Affairs Initiative

Veterans of war will gain additional protection from debt collectors. The government has approved amendments to the Law “On Consumer Lending,” initiated by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, which expands protections for Defenders and Defenders.

What Changes?

Creditors and debt collection companies will be prohibited from contacting veterans on their own if they officially report that they do not wish to receive such calls. This right will also be extended to veterans’ relatives, their representatives, guarantors, or heirs.

Why is this initiative important?

Previously, similar protection was available only to military personnel and their families. Veterans remained vulnerable to financial pressure from creditors and debt collection companies. These changes will help reduce the risk of psychological stress and strain that may arise during interactions with creditors and will allow veterans to focus on adapting to peaceful life.

“These changes will create legal mechanisms that will allow war veterans to avoid unwanted contact from creditors and debt collectors, which will help reduce the risk of psycho-emotional experiences and stress associated with financial obligations and will become an additional social guarantee that will support war veterans during their return to peaceful life, allowing them to focus on adaptation and recovery. Thank you to the Government for their support!” – noted the Minister for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine, Natalia Kalmykova.

The bill has been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for consideration and adoption.
