On the fourth Saturday of November each year, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor of 1932–1933 and the mass artificial famines of 1921–1923 and 1946–1947. This day of remembrance is a solemn occasion to honor the millions of Ukrainians who perished during these tragic events.
Current events compel us to recognize the vital importance of preserving the memory of past atrocities. Those who committed crimes against humanity must be condemned by the global community, and the victims deserve to be honored with dignity. The lessons of history serve as a crucial guide for navigating the present and shaping a future where such horrors are never repeated.
We invite everyone to join the nationwide minute of silence on November 23 at 16:00, under the theme “Light a Candle,” remembering the millions of Ukrainians whose lives were cut short by the Holodomor and artificial famines. Lighting a candle is a simple yet profound act of remembrance, symbolizing the light of hope and resilience in the face of unimaginable suffering.
The candle of remembrance, which will burn on November 23 in the windows of our homes, is not only a tribute to the past and an expression of our sorrow for the innocent victims, but also our self-awareness and the formation of the Ukrainian nation. It is a symbol of our collective memory and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people.
Only by remembering the past can we create the present and a peaceful future. It is through remembrance that we honor the past, understand the present, and build a better future. Let us never forget the lessons of history, and let us always strive to create a world where such tragedies never occur again.
We remember. We unite. We will prevail. These words embody the spirit of resilience and determination that has sustained the Ukrainian people through times of adversity. Let us stand together in solidarity, honoring the memory of those who suffered and working towards a future of peace and justice.
