Селище Котельва, a historical gem, іts origins dating back to the 16th century. The town’s genesis is linked to the Котелевська фортеця (Kotelva Fortress), erected to defend the eastern frontiers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The earliest official record of the settlement is from 1582. By the first half of the 17th century, Котельва evolved into a significant Cossack town. Notably, after the 1638 uprisings, it gained prominence within the Cossack regimental structure, and following the Khmelnytsky Uprising, Котельва became a centurial town.

In the latter half of the 18th century, the practice of чумацтво (Chumatsvo), a form of trade involving transportation of goods, flourished in the Left-bank Ukraine. Many peasant helpers abandoned their farming to become чумаки, and Котельва emerged as one of the major чумацьких centers in Ukraine. This historical context is a key part of Котельва’s rich tapestry.

The 19th century saw the establishment of a сільське училище (rural school) in Котельва in 1812. The same year witnessed the completion of the brick Trinity Church, which has survived to our time. Throughout the 19th century, Котельва boasted seven Orthodox churches. The town thrived with crafts, a weekly bazaar, and four annual fairs, contributing significantly to the local economy and culture. The historical development of Kotelva is a testament to its enduring spirit.

Today, Котельва continues to lead a quiet life, taking pride not only in its rich history but also in its present. The town offers a blend of historical charm and modern-day living.
